Laguna San Ignacio
Baja California Sur
Mexico
&
the San Diego Zoo
These photos are from a whale watching trip to San Ignacio Lagoon on the Pacific Coast of the
Baja Peninsula in March of 2003
The trip started with a flight to San
Diego.  This is NOT the San Diego
airport.  We took a bus across the
border to the Tijuana, Mexico airport to
catch the above plane.  It looks MUCH
better in the photo than it did in
person, trust me.  We flew about 2
hours down the Baja to the above dirt
air strip.  It was an interesting trip to
say the least
We then had a 15 minute ride down a
dirt "road" to a little cantina on the
lagoon with a few boats anchored near
it. After a 5 minute waid to the boats
we took a 30 minute boat ride to this
island camp.  It was in the middle of
NOWHERE!
Another view of the camp.
Desert plants on the island near the
camp.  the weird thing about this
desert was that it was cool.  The WIND
off the Pacific kept it comfortable to
cool during the day and downright cold
at night.
This is a shallow part of the lagoon
between our island and the mainland.
The tides fluctuated quite a bit and a
low tides there were acres of tidal flats
exposed.  It was beautiful and
supported lots of interesting birds.
What we came for:  a Grey Whale.  We
were able to get quite close to them,
as you will see.  We were restricted by
the Mexican government to 90 minute
sessions on the lagoon twice a day.
There were about 10 or so of the
boats from 3 camps based at the
lagoon.  The lagoon is really big so
you never felt crowded.  The other
camps were not in sight.
A favorite evening activity in camp:  the
prettiest sunsets you have ever seen.
A close up:  notice the eye in the
upper left.
We DID get close!
Nice look at the "blow holes".
Bed rooms.  We had about 25 guests
and 10 staff in camp.
Another desert isle sunset.
